"Appropriate mention has already been made in THE CENTURY of the immense amphitheater of the Stadion which has been restored at the expense of a Greek, M. Averof, in view of the revival of the Olympic Games. (See <<The Olympic Games of 1896>>, THE CENTURY, November, 1896.) About a million drachmae were spent to prepare the Stadion for the recent celebration of the games. The generous donor, who had already deserved by other gifts to have an eminent place among the benefactors of Greece, has undertaken to complete its restoration in marble, at the cost of at least double the amount that has already been spent." - Demetrios Bikelas
